EVALUATION ACTIVITY 3
What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
A production company provides the physical grounds to build on in the form of media entertainment such as films and television programmes. Production companies are usually responsible for sourcing the funds to produce the production. It is also responsible for budgeting, scheduling, the supply with Talent and resources, the organisation of staff, the post production side such as editing and distribution and the actual marketing of the production.
The film distributor is the company or individual solely responsible for the marketing of a film. The distributor may set the release date of the film and the way which the film is made available for viewing e.g., directly to the public through either through cinema viewing or directly to DVD. A distributor may do this directly, if the distributor owns the theaters or film distribution networks, or through exhibitors and other sub-distributors. A limited distributor may only deal with particular products such as DVD’s or Blu-Ray, or may act only in a particular country or market.
For a low budget film like ours the funding would most likely come from a government grant from the UK film council or the British Film institute. From our research we have seen that the BFI have a lottery funding system that provides the 'seed' money for film makers in the UK who are emerging or world class and are capable of creating distinctive and entertaining work. I believe that our film fits suitably into this category and would benefit from this type of funding. I believe our film particularly would be initially distributed through small film festivals across the country such as the commonwealth film festival in Manchester and the East end film festival in London to raise awareness of the production, and establish our production company as a leading British film production company. Then when the film had received some more interest and possibly further funding it could go on to be shown in smaller, independent cinemas such as the corner house in Manchester. Films that would be released in a similar way would be other low budget British films such as Monsters written and directed by Gareth Edwards.
The logo of the real production company we used in our production was Spy glass entertainment, we felt as though this would be a suitable choice as from what we had observed through our research of thriller conventions we noticed that many of the thrillers such as ‘The Sixth sense were either produced or co-produced by Spyglass.
The opening credits mention each person involved in the production in the order which it would in an actual thriller production based mainly on importance with the director appearing first, the assistant director appearing second, followed by the editing and other credits such as props and sound. Each credit is divided with a scene in between; the opening is split between two scenes so the credits only appear on one of the scenes.
In terms of having our film produced we would need to source a smaller UK based production company such as 'Rotted grape productions' or 'Broken Coal productions' who would be willing to produce a low budget thriller with no major star involvement. This could cause problems as small Britsish independant films tend to struggle to achieve out in the film business competing with the major Hollywood blockbusters. From our research we understand that it is very hard to get this kind of small British independant fill off of the ground, we would have to be inovative and find lots of investors. The BBC film network offers a scheme called 'The Britsih council screening scheme' this scheme offers young Britsish independant film makers the chance to enter their short films and have them showcased at various film festivals all around the world. This would save us valuble time and money that we would otherwise have to spend on getting our film out there. Two of the most well known upcoming Britsh film makers are Film4 and the BBC, they could provide valuble insite on what makes a British independant film succeed out there in competiton against the large scale blockbusters produced in Hollyowood. The fact that our film does not contain a well known 'film star' is one of its major disadvantages in competeing against the major Hollywood films that do contain a 'star' so therefore will alreday have a guaranteed audience as people will go to see the film just to see the star in it. This just means that the film has to work that much harder to get produced and gain its audience.
Rotted Grape productions
Rotted grape video productions are a small independent British film production company established by professional film maker Tommy O’Connor; specialising in music videos, fashion film, corporate videos, documentaries, live events, short films and live entertainment.
Rotted grape would be a suitable film company to aid in producing our films because they are small, British and independent. They are willing to produce small low budget films for talented British film makers just starting out and need assistance in producing a film, here is a link to the company's twitter page.

The comapny have stated that they are ''Aiming to create videos with a difference that will get you noticed and have you standing out from the crowd we also offer on set Behind the scenes photography, and our photographer will spend time with you to give you a personal photoshoot that will suit whatever kind of artist you are.
With all these skills, and our dedication we are able to produce high quality original broadcast videos, with airplay on sky music channels in our back catologue, at an affordable rate that will get you the attention you deserve''
The companies aims seem to fit with our production very well and they would be perfect as a small British production company to get us off of the ground.
British film director, producer and actor Sean Medows had his first film produced in 1996 and it was called 'Small Time' to save money he also played the lead himself, meaning there was not the 'star' involvement that would boost screenings and grossings. He directed, acted in and produced the whole film himself. He grew and developed as a film producer, his films have now been adapted to produce popular British television like 'This is England'.
The software we used to edit the production was Final cut pro for Macs we believed that this would be the best software to use because everyone on the production team was already familiar with the software and knew that we could edit the footage in a way that would reflect our vision of what we wanted the production to be like by using this software.
Broken Coal productions
Broken coal productions is a brand new production company established
by songbird’s member Emma Taylor, I have worked closely with Emma on film
shoots with the Production Company and work for her as part of the company. I
recently worked as assistant director on a music video for an upcoming band
called 'Rabbit in the headlights'. Broken Coal and Rotted grape also work quite closely together making a stronger company and boosting Broken Coals reputation as a brand new film company.
